Submissions, submissions, submissions [FU23]

Fortnightly update 23: 12.10.2020 to 25.10.2020

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Flash fiction and short stories

I’m currently submitting flash fiction and short stories to online magazines and such for publication. This fortnight, I submitted my first short story (as opposed to flash fiction), around 5,000 words, to Black Hare Press, a Melbourne-based indie publication. I’m not sure how it will go, but I’m honestly just glad to have wrapped that story up after months of editing. Also, I submitted four other, shorter pieces to various publications this fortnight, my busiest yet. Lastly, I added another flash fiction piece to my website; you can check it out here:

The Front

I write scripts for the popular World War II YouTube channel The Front. Three videos for which I wrote the scripts were uploaded this fortnight. Old mate might like the first one.

Twitter

I write 280-character stories using various writing prompt hashtags on Twitter, and I also host #WeirdVSS. This fortnight, I wrote just two stories. I gotta up my game!

#silver

Fish fins danced silver on the surface of the lake. Mosquito clouds whispered in moonbeams. Frogs rattled in the reeds. I slid naked into the water and down into the embrace of muddy roots and tendrils, where gills flowered on my neck and I found myself most at home.

#clone

I cloned my heart just to watch it beat in a Fanta-filled lab tank. What I didn’t expect is that it would beat faster when my own heart did, nor that I would feel the orange fluid fizzing in my own heart’s chambers. I should have cloned my cat instead.

Conclusion

I think the biggest news this fortnight is that 5,000-word submission. I really didn’t make it easy for myself, but I got there in the end. Other than that, I did a bit of work for HealthJob, though it’s not up on their website yet; they’ll add it soon. The general plan is to keep smashing out flash fiction (I’ll avoid short stories for a while, I think) until I get a bite. I’m becoming a better writer with every one, and it’s just a matter of time until something of mine gets published.

Thanks for reading ❤
