It’s all about them rejections [42]

Fortnightly update 42: 05.07.2021 to 18.07.2021

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. I’m gonna start guaging my success by how many rejections I get. July 8th marked my first year of submitting short stories seriously. In that time, I scored only 56 rejections. I’m hoping to get at least 100 a year. I’m gonna start the count fresh in 2022, but with that said, I’d like to get at least 40 in this latter half of 2021. Wish me luck.

Here at this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 3
Pending: 7
Rejections: 1
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2021 (from June 8th): 1

Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Been smashing out some scripts lately. Feeling real good about the whole thing. Here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 96
Videos for The Braved: 25

Twitter

I write 280-character stories and poems using various writing prompt hashtags, mostly #vss365, on Twitter. I wrote four this fortnight. I love that first haiku. Probably someone’s already written one just like it, though.

#unravelled

From around the corners of our reality, it unravelled him, shifting the tracks so his loved ones drove themselves into an early grave, whispering words he could never know. In the end, when it finally stepped around the corner, he was grateful his mind was already gone.

#antagonistic

They kidnapped my wife and tried to feed her to their starving god. I showed them what a shotgun slug can do to a human body at close range. Yeah, Father, I’d say I’ve been feeling a little antagonistic lately. Now, would you stop yapping and just bless my damn shells?

#almost

Hank almost didn’t pull the trigger. The guy had a wife, kids. He begged like a dog, too, prayed to every god he knew. Hank could almost see himself in the guy’s shoes, could almost let this one rat slide, could almost take his word for it. “Almost,” said Hank. “Almost.”

Conclusion

In other news, I implemented a new work routine this fortnight. I felt I was being inefficient. So far, it’s been working great. I’ve been staying on top of my creative work and my client work, and I haven’t felt so stressed about it all. I’ve also been getting back to the basics a little, brushing up on things like narrative POV and narrative voice, showing vs telling, and showing emotion in writing. I was definitely getting a little sloppy. Maybe you’ll see an improvement in my work. Who knows?

For now, thanks for reading ❤
